You can set up notifications for folders where you need to be notified of document changes. Click on a folder and then Notifications. There are two tabs and anything set up in here is user specific.

Current Folder

You can select Daily Digest, None or Include Subfolders. If Daily Digest is selected, you will get a daily email highlighting any changes to documents within that folder. If you have selected a high-level folder which contains Subfolders, you can select Include Subfolders and the report will include all those other folders.
